Woolwich originally formed part of Kent until 1889, when the county of London was created.  It remained a small Kentish Village until it started to become a leading military and industrial town and is home to the Woolwich Dockyard (founded in 1512), Royal Arsenal (dating back to 1471), the Royal Military Academy (1741) and the Royal Horse Artillery (1793).   It is a notable river crossing point, having the famous Woolwich Ferry and was also the one time home of the Woolwich Building Society.  Arsenal Football Club were also founded in Woolwich in 1886.  Former residents of Woolwich include Julius Francis (heavyweight boxer), Ian Wright (football legend) and Merveille Lukeba (former actor in drama 'Skins').

Woolwich is predominantly made up of period properties, very much like Plumstead, together with a variety of 1930's and new build properties.  A notable property development is Royal Arsenal, which is very close to the riverfront.  This popular development has many benefits including a 24 hour concierge, and on site residents only gymnasium.  The main Town Centre in Woolwich has recently benefited from a fifty million pound government cash injection, in order to regenerate the area. You will find Woolwich Town Centre a much nicer place to be as a result of this.
